A mature doe (1 or 2 years old) will give birth to one to three fawns yearly. Over the course of five years, five males and five females have the potential to produce up a couple hundred deer. When these high numbers of deer are confined to small areas, people start feeling the effect in many different ways.

1. Destruction of Home Gardens and Landscaping
A mature deer will eat four to eight pounds of forage over the course of a day. In overpopulated areas you will notice ‘browse lines’ similar to this picture. Deer typically eat from the ground up. The end result is as if a vacuum cleaner swept through your property sucking off every twig, blossom, and leaf in sight. It leads to a very undesirable sight. It has been estimated that residential landscape damage in the U.S. may exceed $250 million per year.

2. Vehicle Collisions
Each year in the Unite States, about 29,000 people are injured and more than 200 people are killed in deer/vehicle collisions. An estimated 1.5 million deer are killed, annually, resulting in more than $1 billion in property damage.

3. Lyme Disease
White-tailed deer are the primary hosts for black-legged ticks, or deer ticks. These ticks are responsible for transmitting Lyme disease to humans. More than 13,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported, annually. Research has shown increased tick abundance and more human disease occurrences in areas with high deer densities.

4. Habitat Degradation
Excessive deer densities are known to cause long-term damage to wildlife habitats. Overabundant deer herds can nearly eliminate certain plant species, alter habitat structures, and disrupt natural succession of plant communities.

5. Declining Deer Herd Health
As deer populations over utilize available food sources, herd health inevitably declines. Increased parasite loads and declines in body weight, antler production, and fawn production are often followed by large-scale deer “die-offs”.

6. Public Safety
Aggressive encounters between people and deer are relatively uncommon. Nonetheless, 5 – 10 people are killed annually in the U.S. by aggressive rutting bucks.
